riding the rails

Grandpa planned to take W for a real train ride before the end of the year, but then discovered his passes would allow him to take the whole family... so we all went for a train ride!

Here they are waiting in the station. W is upset because he thought stopping for pics would make us miss the train. Check out his look of death!

On our way!

It was fun, especially for W... and let's face it, the trip really was just for him. Just look at the joy in this kid's eyes...

I didn't take any out-the-window shots, not having a window seat, but it was lovely and we saw several bald eagles on our ride. For me, the most interesting part was to watch the landscape scream by at a whopping 35 mph and think about just how fast that was during the height of rail travel. We are quite spoiled and now that speed seems so slow.

And of course we couldn't leave without a trip to Granny's for lunch. Beorn and I have fond memories of that place from the summer we met - since no staff trip into town was complete without a visit to Granny's for shakes. Unfortunately, this particular visit was marred by horrible service - a first in the almost 20 years I've been a customer.

Thanks Grandpa, for a fun and memorable experience!
